Polymer solar cell

Polymer solar cells produce electricity from sunlight. They are now durable and incorporated in many devices, for example, in small commercial calculators such as are given as gifts by accounting companies. A remaining question is whether polymer solar cells can successfully compete with cells produced by the specialized silicon industry. Compared to silicon-based devices, polymer solar cells are lightweight (which is important for small autonomous sensors), disposable, inexpensive to fabricate, flexible, designable on the molecular level, and have little potential for environmental impact, however the energy yield is just slowly reaching levels of a 1/4 of regular silicon solar cells, and construction geometries have not been fully explored.
